Pearls that are fresh water make up about 90% of today’s market of worldwide pearls and are never as large, or as accessible in the history of pearls. These fresh water pearls have been found all around the world with the most notable cultivations in Japan, United States and China.

Colors

The colors of fresh water pearls are reliant on the shell they are gathered from. The colors that are natural vary a lot including:

  • White
  • Cream through golden
  • Lavender
  • Pink
  • Soft blue

Other than the natural colors, the Chinese fresh water pearls can be found in an array of non-natural treated and dyed colors.

Japan

Currently, there are 3 people who are employed in farming of pearl in fresh water production in Japan. The pearls they develop are lovingly farmed in accordance with the wonders of nature which takes a long time.

China

In China, pearls that are fresh water farmed started in the early 70’s but China has created pearls inside fresh water mussels for many centuries. For many years the fresh water pearls farmed in China were very elaborate in shape, and earned the title “rice crispies”. Most Chinese fresh water pearls today are formed by using the insertion of ‘mantle tissue’ and now have dozens of pearls harvested from the same mussel shell.

More information

If you need further information at https://pearlsonly.ca/ you will find that in recent years China has begun to produce larger bead nucleated baroque and round pearls needing technicians that are much more skilled. These fresh water mussels spend many years in the waters. It still has not been seen how long China will continue at its staggering rate of production.

Lessons learned

It is hoped that the lessons learned from Japan as well as the protection of waters for generations in the futurewill help in China or will they get burned out and leave a path of polluted waters. Because of the massive amounts of pearls from fresh water coming out of China currently, pearls are less expensive and more accessible than ever before.

Only time will tell if Chinese fresh water strands will continue to be farmed and sold in the amounts they currently are.
